Nanny-state Ontario considering lower residential speed limits.

The Government of Ontario, or as some of us like to call it, 'No-fun-tario', is considering lower speed limits in residential areas. Presumably for a cash grab to catch "speeders". The current speed, of 50 KM/H is considered too high, after being 'safe' for many years.

While I think 50 KM/H default is good as it is, the example I see in the report is exaggerated. that road could use a 30 KM/H speed (imo). Every other residential street I've driven on went by fine with 50 KM/H.

Thoughts, my fellow Opponauts?

50 km/h on most streets and 40 km/h in school zones works fine. I can understand if they want to lower the speed limit in downtown Toronto, though, because people keep getting run over. Everywhere else? The speed limit is fine. Maybe the drivers are the problem.

Thoughts: I really hate the govt of ontario, and this idea is very stupid.

What kind of Mickey Mouse bullshit is this km thing? Is it like a mile for parts of the world that don't matter?

Miles for the parts of the world that do matter. Only insignificant countries like Liberia and Myanmar use miles. There was some other country too, but I forget where.

Would you trade lower residential limits for a highway boost to 130 km/h?

That's a tricky one, I'd love to have a quicker flow on the highway. If the 'residential' speeds stay to narrow residential roads, i'd be for it.

In the road in the report, I'd say it makes sense. there's lots of cars parked, children playing, lots of houses, unless you're passing through, I'd see no reason to go faster there.

However, they are doing a pilot project for school zones around here at 30 in ~600m stretches, and it is agonizing, it's full of pillars in the middle of the road, and I tend to feel like I'm going to understeer into them. This is also a road that doesn't have many cars.

I'm guessing this is among other stricter measures to reduce road accidents.

Some other laws in the pipeline include:

1. Raising the age to get a permanent license to 35. So you must always have a 35+ person in your car if you are below 35.

2. Mandating attachment of old tires on all flat vertical surfaces of the car.

3. Mandating the all parking lots, school zones and residential neighbourhoods to have speed bumps every 100 meters.

4. Mandating a legal turning speed of 25 mph.

5. New "Don't Smile talk while driving", "Dont laugh while driving" and "Don't eat while driving" campaigns to reduce distractions during driving.

This is most likely a money grab disguised as "safety". This reminds me of a barren stretch of road in the town I used to live in where they lowered the speed limit from 45 to 35 for "safety". The only thing on that stretch of road is a couple of driveways and a church parking lot where the cops always sit in the off hours insuring the "safety" of everyone.
